Members of the Advisory Board for the Duke Center for Personalized Health Care are prominent members of the Duke community doing innovative work in fields that impact the personalized medicine and personalized healthcare movements. Their support of initiatives at the Center represents a commitment to a larger group goal of making health care more predictive, proactive, and personalized.
Tom Allin
From 2015-2017, Tom worked as the VA’s Chief Veterans Experience Officer reporting to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. This was the first cabinet-level customer service role in US government. In those two years, Tom built a Veterans Experience (VE) office with capabilities in Insight & Design, Customer Measurement, Enterprise Operations and Field Execution. The VE office is responsible for designing improved service for Veterans across VA and measuring CX performance improvement.
Prior to work as Chief VE Officer at the VA, Tom served as Chief Executive of Jollibee Foods Corporation, the largest restaurant company in Asia. Before Jollibee Foods, Tom began his career in McDonald’s where he spent twenty-three years with fifteen years in Europe. He was the first President of McDonald’s France, totally responsible for launching the business in that market. Afterward, Tom was asked to open a European office in London where he was in charge of twenty countries in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He set up the European management structure to leverage economies of scale in purchasing, construction, and marketing.
Mark McClellan
Mark McClellan, MD, PhD is the Robert J. Margolis Professor of Business, Medicine, and Policy, and Director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy at Duke University with offices at Duke and in Washington DC.
Dr. McClellan is a doctor and an economist, and his work has addressed a wide range of strategies and policy reforms to improve health care, including payment reforms to promote better outcomes and lower costs, methods for development and use of real-world evidence, and approaches for more effective drug and device innovation. Dr. McClellan is a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he developed and implemented major reforms in health policy. He was also a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a professor of economics and medicine at Stanford University.
Geoffrey Ginsburg
Geoffrey S. Ginsburg, MD, PhD is the director of the Duke Center for Applied Genomics and Precision Medicine. His research interests are in the development of novel paradigms for developing and translating genomic information into medical practice and the integration of personalized medicine into health care.
Kevin A. Schulman
Kevin A. Schulman, MD, MBA serves as a professor of medicine and the Gregory Mario and Jeremy Mario Professor of Business Administration at Duke University. He currently holds several faculty and leadership appointments at Duke.
He is a faculty associate director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute at the School of Medicine, at 1200 people the country’s largest academic clinical research organization. His other university affiliations include the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and History of Medicine; the Duke Translational Research Institute; and he served on the Executive Committee of the Duke Global Health Institute where he remains a faculty member.
Dr. Schulman is a distinguished researcher who has received more than $48 million in research grants. His research interests include health care policy; organizational innovation in health care, and health economics. Dr. Schulman has published over 400 papers, book chapter, and business case studies. His peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Annals of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the editorial/advisory boards of the American Heart Journal, Health Policy, Management and Innovation (www.HMPI.Org), and Senior Associate Editor of Health Services Research.
Dr. Schulman is a co-founder of Bivarus, a novel survey platform to assess the patient experience in care (www.Bivarus.com; Series A funded by Excelerate Ventures); is a founder of Faculty Connections, LLC, a consulting services company; a founder of PELI, LLC, an on-line physician leadership program acquired by Duke University and now marketed by Medscape as the Business of Healthcare Academy, is a Board member of Anthelio, Inc, an IT services company, and served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Nutrition Sciences Initiative (www.NUSI.org). He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy.
